Hip replacement devices can provide patients—particularly the elderly—with increased mobility and reduced pain. Unfortunately, however, there have been dozens of hip recalls over the past decade, often times due to hip implant defects that cause patient harm. When a defective hip implant is used during a surgery, an affected a patient does not have to accept it; rather, if damages have been sustained, a civil action with hip replacement lawyers can yield compensation.

Common Hip Implant Defects

When a hip implant is defective, it can cause a patient undue harm, often resulting in related health complications or necessitating the need of a secondary correctional surgery. Some of the most common hip implant defects include:
  • Premature failure;
  • Loosening of joint;
  • Improper fit; and
  • Wear of metal-on-metal devices, causing metallic debris in body.
The above can cause pain, metal poisoning, inflammation, infection, death of body tissues, soft tissue damage, cysts, and muscle and bone damage.

Hip Replacement Recalls

When the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) learns that a hip implant is causing patient harm, it will issue a recall. Unfortunately, by the time a recall is issued, it is often too late; dozens of patients have already been harmed. Our team of hip replacement lawyers has researched many devices. Some of the most common defective hip replacement recalls include those manufactured by:
  • DePuy Orthopaedics: In August 2010, DePuy Orthopaedics file a recall of its ASR™ XL Acetabular Hip System and DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System.
  • Styker Orthopaedics: On July 6, 2012 – Stryker announced it recalled its Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck stems. The issue comes from mechanically assisted corrosion and release of metal ions of Cobalt and Chromium that affect surrounding tissue and bone over time.
  • Smith & Nephew
  • Zimmer Holdings
  • Wright Medical Technology
  • Exactech
  • Encore Orthopedics
  • Biomet; and
  • Centerpulse.
