About Repetitive Stress Injuries

When many people think of workers’ compensation, they think of single incidents that leave workers injured. Workplace accidents are certainly behind many workers’ comp claims, but they are not the only source of these. The normal activities associated with one’s job, even without an accident, can cause injuries. These are often referred to as repetitive motion injuries, repetitive stress injuries or cumulative trauma injuries. Repetitive stress injuries develop over time. They may be caused by repetitive motions performed on the job, even if these motions themselves do not seem particularly difficult or traumatic to the muscles, joints, tendons or limbs. Typing or working on an assembly line, for example, may cause carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis or bursitis. Continued physical strain, such as heavy lifting or other types of hard labor, may cause lasting injuries. In New York, workers who are suffering the consequences of repetitive motion injuries may be eligible for workers’ compensation by filing a claim with the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board. They may be entitled to medical care and cash benefits if they are unable to work for a time because of their injuries. Workers’ comp may also cover vocational rehabilitation, which may help a worker receive training for a new line of work if unable to return to his or her previous job.

Types of Repetitive Motion Injuries

Three of the most common repetitive motion injuries are: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Carpal tunnel syndrome is one of the most common repetitive motion injuries, particularly in assembly line employees and typists. This condition is caused by the compression of the median nerve, a key nerve in the wrist. When this nerve is compressed, numbness, tingling and pain may result. The muscles in the hand may even deteriorate if carpal tunnel syndrome is left untreated, making it difficult to perform fine motor skills or even to grasp objects. Bursitis Commonly occurring in the shoulder, hip or elbow, bursitis is a painful condition caused by the inflammation of bursae (fluid-filled pads that act as cushions among the bones and the tendons and muscles near the joints.) It may also occur by the knee, heel or base of the big toe. Tendinitis Tendinitis occurs when any of the tendons that attach muscle to bone become inflamed or irritated. It is most common around the shoulders, elbows, wrists and heels. Symptoms include pain, tenderness and possibly swelling.
