Filing an Application for Social Security Disability Benefits

Deciding to file an application for Social Security Disability benefits is an important choice you must make for yourself. Filing an application means that you do not expect to be able to work for at least 12 months. It means that you have been disabled and are seeking for financial support from the Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program, which is managed by the Social Security Administration (SSA). There is more to filing an application than simply filling out a form and mailing it to your local SSA office. You need to make sure this form is properly filled out and that all supporting documentation is included. You need to comply with filing deadlines and must ensure that all applicable information is included, as this will give you the best opportunity of having the SSA approve you for benefits.

How do I apply?

You can begin the application process online, using forms provided on the SSA website to fill out the necessary paperwork. You can also apply in person, can call the SSA to schedule an appointment or can visit your local Social Security office. Click here for more information on applying for disability benefits. When you file a Social Security Disability application, you will need to be able to prove that you meet the government's definition of "disabled." You will need to be able to prove that you will be unable to work for at least 12 months and that your mental or physical condition is severe enough to interfere with your ability to take part in any type of gainful employment, not just the job you previously did. Some of the information and documents you will need to locate and provide to the SSA may include:
  • Your Social Security number
  • Your most recent W-2
  • Proof of age
  • Information about your work history
  • All relevant medical contact information (doctors, hospitals, medical facilities, etc.)
  • All relevant medical records (lab and test results, the names of medications you are taking, etc.)
Even if you take the time to gather all of this information and submit your application, this is no guarantee that it will be approved. The majority of applications submitted to the SSA are denied. In 2011, nearly two-thirds of all applications were denied by the agency. If your claim has been denied, or if you have not yet submitted an application and are interested in receiving professional help in doing so, Napoli Shkolnik PLLC may be able to assist you.
