Millions of Metal Wire Grill Brushes Recalled After Reports of Swallowed Metal Bristles Resulting in Serious Injuries

Outdoor grilling is a staple in many American households, but a recent nationwide recall is a stark reminder that even everyday tools can pose serious safety risks. On February 26, 2026, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of approximately 3,200,000 Weber metal wire bristle grill brushes due to a dangerous defect that has already led to reported injuries and followed suit with over 10.2 million Nexgrill brushes on March 26, 2026.

If you own a Nexgrill or Weber grill brush, it’s critical to understand the risks, determine whether your product is affected, and take immediate action to protect yourself and your family.

What Is the Safety Hazard?

The issue at the center of the recall is both simple and alarming: small metal bristles can detach from the brush during normal use.

Once dislodged, these bristles can:

  • Stick to grill grates
  • Transfer onto food
  • Be unknowingly ingested

Because the bristles are extremely small and can blend in with grill marks or food texture, they are nearly impossible to detect before consumption.

What Nexgrill and Weber Metal Wire Brush Products Are Included in the Recall?

These brushes typically feature metal wire bristles and either plastic or wood handles, measuring between 12 and 21 inches in length.

The products were sold nationwide from 2011 through 2026 at major retailers, including:

  • Lowe’s
  • Home Depot
  • Ace Hardware
  • Target
  • Amazon
  • Weber.com

They were priced between $5 and $17, making them a common and widely accessible grill-cleaning tool.

Reported Injuries and Medical Risks

There have been at least:

  • 38 reports of bristles detaching from the brushes for Weber and 68 for Nexgrill
  • 4 confirmed cases where consumers swallowed bristles and required medical treatment

While those numbers may seem limited relative to the number of units sold, the severity of potential injuries makes this defect particularly concerning.

Potential Health Consequences Include:

  • Puncture wounds to the mouth or throat
  • Internal injuries to the stomach or intestines
  • Internal bleeding
  • Infection
  • Migration of the bristle through soft tissue over time
  • Emergency surgical intervention

In some cases, symptoms may not appear immediately. A swallowed bristle can remain lodged in the body and cause complications weeks or even months later, making diagnosis more difficult and increasing the risk of serious harm.

Why This Recall Matters

Grill brushes are marketed as durable, reliable tools designed for routine cleaning. Consumers reasonably expect that such products are safe when used as intended.

However, in this case, the recalled Nexgrill and Weber brushes were allegedly:

  • Manufactured with bristles prone to detachment during ordinary use
  • Marketed without clear warnings about the ingestion hazard
  • Promoted for durability and effectiveness without disclosing safety risks

Despite consumer reports over time indicating that bristles could loosen or fall out, the risk was not prominently communicated prior to the recall.

For companies like Weber and Nexgrill, this raises serious questions about product safety, quality control, and consumer warnings.

What Should Consumers Do Now?

Stop using the brushes immediately. For Weber-Identify the product with the images provided on Weber’s recall page to determine if it is affected. For Nexgrill,  contact the company for a full refund to be issued as a gift card. Consumers will be provided with a registration code as part of the recall process and will be directed to upload a photograph of their grill brush with that code and their initials to the recall website to register for the recall. If you think you have been affected by the bristles falling off and have an injury, you can contact our team for a free case consultation.

A Broader Warning About Wire Grill Brushes

These recalls highlight a broader safety issue that extends beyond a single brand. Wire grill brushes, in general, have long been associated with ingestion hazards.

Consumers may want to consider safer alternatives, such as:

  • Nylon bristle brushes
  • Grill stones or pumice cleaning blocks
  • Scrapers without bristles

Taking proactive steps can significantly reduce the risk of injury when maintaining your grill.

When a Defective Product Causes Harm

When a product causes injury during normal use, it may be more than just an accident; it could be a matter of product liability.

Manufacturers have a legal obligation to ensure that their products are:

  • Reasonably safe for intended use
  • Free from dangerous defects
  • Accompanied by adequate warnings about known risks

When companies fail to meet these responsibilities, injured consumers may have the right to pursue compensation for:

  • Medical expenses
  • Pain and suffering
  • Lost wages
  • Long-term health complications
