Wright Profemur Hip Implants

If you need a hip replacement, a doctor will surgically remove your damaged, arthritic, or otherwise painful hip joint and will replace it with a manufactured joint made of metal, plastic, and/or ceramic. This procedure is intended to relieve long-lasting pain in patients and allow them to be active for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately, not all patients who undergo hip replacement surgery experience relief, as some individuals face numerous complications. Often, complications regarding a hip replacement are caused by a defective implant sold by a medical manufacturer.

Claims Regarding Profemur Implants

The Profemur-Z hip system was developed by Wright Medical Technology and marketed for individuals who planned to live a more active lifestyle following their hip replacement. The implant was claimed to be particularly durable because the implant consisted largely of titanium. The product was fast-tracked through the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval process and thousands of individuals in the United States began receiving the Profemur-Z in their hip replacements. Unfortunately, many patients quickly learned that the claims of durability were false. In fact, many of these titanium implants were subject to different complications including fretting (wearing down), corrosion, or fracture of the femoral neck or another part of the implant. As a result of these implant failures, many individuals with the Profemur implant began experiencing the following symptoms:
  • Severe inflammation, swelling, and pain in the hip area;
  • Damage to muscle or tissue;
  • Bone loss;
  • Impaired mobility, including the ability to walk;
  • Loosening of the joint;
  • Development of non-cancerous pseudotumors;
  • Pieces of metal debris floating freely in the body;
  • Metal particles released into the bloodstream;
  • Metal poisoning or metallosis.

Unacceptable Failure Rate

According to the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, most hip replacement patients have a 90 to 95 percent chance that their implant will last for at least ten years and an 80 to 85 percent chance of it lasting for 20 years. However, it has been reported that the Profemur has a more than an 11 percent chance of failing within only three years. When this failure occurs, patients often must undergo painful and costly revision surgery much sooner than anticipated. Many people have filed lawsuits against Wright Medical alleging not only that the Profemur implant was defective but also that the company knew of the defect and dangers and continued to manufacture the implant.
