Microplastics: A Public Health Hazard

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in size. They come from various sources, including the breakdown of larger plastic items, synthetic fibers from clothing, and microbeads found in personal care products. Due to their small size, microplastics can easily spread through the environment and be ingested by wildlife and humans, raising concerns about their impact on ecosystems and health.

A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that microplastics are linked to serious cardiovascular problems such as heart attacks and strokes.
