We’re Holding Manufacturers Accountable for Your Water System Costs Due to Single-Use Plastics and Microplastics

Microplastics are a public nuisance and environmental hazard resulting in cleanup costs in the millions of dollars and cause serious health conditions.

Microplastics: A Public Health Hazard

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in size. They come from various sources, including the breakdown of larger plastic items, synthetic fibers from clothing, and microbeads found in personal care products. Due to their small size, microplastics can easily spread through the environment and be ingested by wildlife and humans, raising concerns about their impact on ecosystems and health.

A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that microplastics are linked to serious cardiovascular problems such as heart attacks and strokes.

Everyday Plastics such as bottles, bags, straws, toys etc, released into the environment take centuries to degrade. According to EPA, studies show that carcinogenic chemicals found in plastic products can leach into tap water, which may cause developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune disorders

Larger plastic waste breaks down from the sun, and from strong ocean currents which are known to act as “cuisinarts” on plastics.

Who are the polluters?

Manufacture and Distribution:

Just as PFAS manufacturers should be held accountable, producers of single-use plastics and microplastics are directly responsible for the pollution of surface water systems. Their products, which are designed for disposability, are significant contributors to environmental contamination.

Foreseeability of Harm:

Manufacturers of single-use plastics and microplastics knew or should have known about the environmental impact of their products. The widespread pollution of water systems is a foreseeable consequence of the production and use of these materials.

Failure to Warn and Corporate Accountability

  • Lack of Adequate Warnings: Similar to PFAS, manufacturers failed to adequately warn users about the environmental and health hazards associated with their products, particularly their persistence in the environment and potential to break down into harmful microplastics.
  • Corporate Social Responsibility: Companies must be held accountable for the life-cycle impact of their products. This includes taking responsibility for the costs associated with cleaning up the environmental damage caused by singleuse
    plastics and microplastics .

The Impact on Surface & Drinking Water Systems

  • Filtration and Treatment Costs: Surface water systems are facing escalating costs to remove microplastics and other contaminants from drinking water. Advanced filtration technologies and treatment processes are expensive, and these costs are often passed on to consumers.
  • Infrastructure Upgrades: Drinking water systems may need to invest in new infrastructure to effectively handle the increasing load of plastic pollutants, including upgrades to filtration systems and the development of new treatment methods.
  • Waste Management: The disposal and management of collected microplastics from water treatment processes also add to operational costs, requiring specialized handling and disposal methods to prevent further environmental contamination .
