Mesothelioma Lawyers Serving Clients Nationwide

The relationship between smoking and mesothelioma is one that has brought up much confusion over the years. There is no direct relationship between cigarette smoking and mesothelioma, but smokers who are exposed to asbestos may be at a higher risk of developing asbestos-related diseases because smoking can weaken the lungs and make them more susceptible to disease. Mesothelioma patients are advised to quit smoking because of the adverse effects cigarette smoke has on the lungs. People who work with asbestos are also advised not to smoke. Whether you smoke or not, if you contracted mesothelioma, asbestosis, lung cancer or a pleural disorder as a result of asbestos exposure, you may be entitled to financial compensation. A mesothelioma lawyer at our firm can talk to you about your options in filing a lawsuit against the asbestos manufacturer or other potentially at-fault party. Though taking legal action may not be the first thing on your mind, it may be your only way to seek financial compensation for medical expenses and other financial, emotional and physical losses or injuries.

The Dangers of Smoking and Working Around Asbestos

Though medical research has not established a direct link between smoking and mesothelioma, there is an established link between mesothelioma and asbestos exposure. Asbestos is recognized as the cause of mesothelioma, when asbestos fibers become lodged in the lining of the lungs, heart or abdomen. Smoking is recognized as a serious hazard to anyone who is exposed to asbestos, as it may increase one’s chances of developing lung cancer. According to the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease Registry (ATSDR):
Cigarette smoking weakens the lungs and decreases their ability to remove asbestos fibers. Cigarette smoke also irritates air passages, causing them to produce more mucus. These effects block the passage of air and further decrease the removal of asbestos fibers from the lungs.
Though mesothelioma is not caused by smoking, a smoker who is exposed to asbestos may be more likely to experience health problems as a result of his or her exposure. This can be attributed to the smoker’s weakened lungs.

Will smoking increase my chances of contracting mesothelioma?

It is possible that smoking may increase your chances of contracting mesothelioma, but this has not been supported by medical research. Smoking is not the cause of mesothelioma – asbestos is. Smoking may, however, adversely affect your lungs and make them less able to expel asbestos fibers that are inhaled.

If I smoke, does that mean I can’t file an asbestos lawsuit?

Being a smoker should not impact your ability to seek financial compensation by way of a mesothelioma lawsuit or any type of asbestos exposure claim. If you have questions about your right to compensation, please schedule a case review with one of our lawyers.
