BEN CRUMP TO ANNOUNCE LAWSUIT CLAIMING HOLLYWOOD POLICE PARALYZED MAN ASKING FOR HELP

March 19, 2023

Civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump announced a news conference will be held at 2:45 p.m., on Wednesday outside of the Broward Law Office of the Public Defender in Fort Lauderdale.

Crump, who recently accepted the NAACP’s Social Justice Impact Award, plans to speak about a case alleging police brutality is to blame for a man who was left paralyzed.

Crump and co-counsel attorneys Hunter Shkolnik, of Napoli Shkolnik PLLC, and Sue-Ann Robinson, of Robinson Caddy Law, plan to meet with Martin Ortiz’s family to announce the filing of a lawsuit against the City of Hollywood.

Ortiz called 911 on July 2021 to ask for help amid a mental health emergency. Surveillance video shows Hollywood police officers restraining Ortiz and placing him on the ground. The attorneys claim a police officer then shot Ortiz in the back while he was naked and unarmed.
