Mesothelioma Attorneys

Mesothelioma Lawyer

With fewer than 100 recorded cases, testicular mesothelioma is one of the rarest types of mesothelioma. If you or a loved one have been diagnosed with this deadly form of cancer, you may wish to consider involving a lawyer. Exposure to asbestos is the primary cause of mesothelioma, recognized by some as the only cause of this cancer. If you were exposed at work, during military service or in any other scenario, you may be entitled to medical care, benefits and financial compensation. Asbestos manufacturers or employers may be held accountable for exposure in certain situations. A mesothelioma attorney at Napoli Shkolnik PLLC can talk to you about your options to see how to best seek justice on your behalf.

In addition to contacting our firm for a free case review, you can review the information on this page to learn more about testicular mesothelioma, including the symptoms, treatment options and more. This is no substitute for information and guidance from a trained medical professional, but we hope it can help you better understand this serious form of cancer.

Understanding Testicular Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that affects the mesothelium, a membrane that lines certain organs and body cavities. The mesothelium plays an important role in the body, producing fluids to protect and lubricate the organs so they can move freely in the body. There are different areas of the mesothelium, such as the pleura, which lines the lungs and chest cavity; the peritoneum, which lines the abdomen and abdominal organs; the pericardium, which lines the heart; and the tunica vaginalis, which lines the testicles. Testicular mesothelioma is a cancer of the tunica vaginalis.

Like other forms of mesothelioma, testicular mesothelioma may be caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. When a person inhales or swallows asbestos fibers, they may become lodged in the mesothelium, where they may remain for years or even decades, causing irritation and inflammation and, in some cases, eventually changing the genetic make-up of the mesothelial cells. This may lead to the development of tumors. Due to the rarity of testicular mesothelioma, it is unknown exactly how asbestos fibers may migrate to the testicles or how the cells in this area become cancerous.

Testicular mesothelioma is typically secondary to a tumor or tumors that have already developed in the peritoneum, the lining of the abdominal organs and cavity. It is a particularly aggressive form of mesothelioma that may continue to spread to other areas of the body, including the chest, brain, lungs and lymph nodes. Treatment options may be limited, depending on how far the cancer has spread and the patient's age and overall health.

Because testicular mesothelioma is so rare, there is limited information available as to the specific set of symptoms and viable treatment options. We have been able to gather some helpful information, however, based on the few cases that have been reported. The majority of patients experienced swelling and testicular lumps as symptoms of testicular mesothelioma. Treatment has included the surgical removal of a portion of the affected testicle or the entire testicle, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and a combination of these. Patients also experienced a high rate of recurrence, with cancer returning within a few years even after the tumors were removed.
