NYU’s Dr. Avrom Caplan says a severe ringworm infection isn’t yet a problem in the United States, and he hopes to keep it that way.
The woman’s infection turned out to be caused by a relatively new species of ringworm-causing fungus, called Trichophyton indotineae. Over the past decade, infections from this drug-resistant fungus have spread rapidly in South Asia, likely driven by overuse of medications to treat them, including topical antifungals and corticosteroids, a CDC report said.
Like drug-resistant bacteria, drug-resistant fungi are a serious public health concern. Cases of Candida auris, another type of drug-resistant fungal infection, have been spreading in health care facilities in the U.S. That infection is extremely difficult to treat and can be deadly.
Health and Safety Away from Home
The COVID-19 pandemic is in our rearview mirror and people are traveling abroad again. These travels often involve some health and safety issues.
Bacterial/Fungal Infections
Sooner or later, most foreign public health crises become U.S. public health crises. Airport workers have a duty to screen people entering from foreign countries for signs of infection. Most of the aforementioned infections have at least a seven-day incubation period. Therefore, many people are sick and don’t know it.
Hospital workers have a similar duty, and breakdowns could be devastating. The city of Dallas, Texas narrowly dodged a bullet in 2014, when an Ebola-infected man went to a local hospital. The medical staff concluded the man had a sour stomach and sent him home.
Damages Available
These incidents often cause serious injuries. A personal injury attorney can obtain the compensation these victims need to overcome their illnesses or injuries and move on with their lives.
This compensation includes money for economic losses. The medical bills and lost wages in a catastrophic (life-threatening) injury case could exceed $150,000. Most insurance plans don’t cover injury-related expenses and most families have basically no savings. So, the economic losses alone could be devastating.
Paying bills isn’t enough to put these victims back on the right track. These victims also deserve compensation for their pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment in life, emotional distress, and loss of consortium (companionship).
Additional punitive damages may be available as well, if there is clear and convincing evidence that the tortfeasor (negligent actor) intentionally disregarded a known risk. Such evidence is often available in product defect and other extreme cases.
