Impacting the Health of Workers—and Their Families

A detailed report conducted by the Environmental Protection Commission outlined how Gopher  had removed equipment that would have captured noxious fumes. Evidence of hazardous leaks, unsafe levels of lead-laced dust on the plant floor and life-threatening levels of chemicals were also reported.

Combined with not being outfitted with the proper protective equipment, a staggering 80% of Gopher employees have suffered from increased blood pressure, kidney dysfunction, and cardiovascular disease between 2014 and 2018 due to chronic lead exposure. The lead dust also caused workers to experience dizziness, dehydration, and shortness of breath, increasing the frequency of workplace accidents such as burns.

Employees’ families were also unknowingly exposed unharmful chemicals by the dust and residue that workers brought home on their shoes and clothes. This is particularly alarming because lead exposure can cause intellectual disability and behavioral disorders in children. Pregnant women exposed to lead are at increased risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, and low birth weight.

Harm to the Surrounding Community

Due to Gopher Resource’s activities, lead pollution in the vicinity was found to be more than five times the federal limit. This prompted the Environmental Protection Commission of Hillsborough County to issue its first Air Pollution Precaution. The EPC cautioned individuals in the area to reduce the amount of time they spent outside.
