Uloric (Febuxostat) is a prescription medication created to treat patients suffering from gout. Uloric was first put on the market in the United States in February of 2009.\u00a0 The drug company that developed and sold Uloric is Takeda Pharmaceuticals. When Uloric was first put on the market, Takeda Pharmaceuticals did not warn doctors, or their patients, that Uloric could cause an increased risk of heart attacks, strokes or other cardiovascular problems, and that it could even cause death.<\/p>\n

WHAT IS GOUT?<\/h2>\n

Gout is a form of arthritis materializing as sudden, severe pain, redness, joint tenderness and swelling. Gout is often found in lower joints like the ankles, feet and toes, but it can also appear in the hands, wrists, and fingers.\u00a0 Gout is caused by elevated uric acid levels in the blood and\u00a0can be very painful and debilitating.<\/p>\n

WHAT IS ULORIC?<\/h2>\n

Uloric (Febuxostat) is a xanthine oxidase inhibitor prescribed for management of chronic hyperuricemia (increased Uric Acid levels in the blood) in adult patients with gout. Uloric originally was granted FDA approval on February 13, 2009.\u00a0 When the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Uloric in 2009, the FDA was concerned Uloric could be dangerous and could cause cardiovascular conditions, so it required that Takeda conduct a mandatory post-marketing cardiovascular safety study.<\/p>\n

The results of the 6,000-patient safety study trial were published in the\u00a0New England Journal of Medicine<\/em><\/a>\u00a0on March 29, 2018. The authors of the study found a statistically significant increased risk of cardiovascular death for users of Uloric compared to users of allopurinol.<\/p>\n
