Several other risk factors increase the chances of a child developing Erb\u2019s Palsy, such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improper C-section (cesarean section),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excessive maternal weight gain,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forceful pulling on the arm,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Large infant size or high birth weight,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>diabetes materna,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Second stage of labor lasting over an hour,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Small or abnormal maternal pelvis shape,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of assistive delivery tools, such as forceps or vacuum extractor, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other forms of medical negligence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors have a duty of care to spot prenatal red flags, such as LGA (large for gestational age), and respond appropriately to these risks. Then, in the delivery room, doctors must prioritize patient health and safety above everything else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Signs &amp; Symptoms of Erb\u2019s Palsy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some Erb\u2019s Palsy symptoms, such as total paralysis of the affected arm, are often recognizable at birth. However, the true nature and severity of nerve damage, as well as the limits on a child\u2019s movement, may not be apparent until the child is between three and six months old. The most common symptoms of Erb\u2019s Palsy include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Baby\u2019s arm hangs by the side and wrist rotates inward (waiter&#8217;s tip),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decreased grip strength,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Limited motion of the arm,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Numbness in arm,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Partial or total paralysis of the arm, and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Weakness in the arm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to contact your doctor if your child is showing any of the signs listed above. The sooner you get a diagnosis, the sooner your child can get treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Erb\u2019s Palsy Treatment and Prognosis<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the child is younger than six months, many doctors take a \u201cwait and see\u201d approach. If the child is older, more in-depth treatment, such as therapy or surgery, is required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Physical therapists help improve stiffness and immobility in a child\u2019s arms or shoulders. Therapists use massage techniques, motion exercises, and exercise equipment to improve movement and strength in the affected arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More intensive occupational therapy helps children develop the strength to perform everyday activities, such as picking up a toy or bottle. An occupational therapist uses a range of movement exercises to improve joint function and muscle tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Children with severe cases of Erb\u2019s Palsy usually require surgery to repair nerve damage and paralysis in the arm, hand, elbow, or shoulder. It is important to get surgery as soon as possible. Postponing Erb\u2019s Palsy surgery significantly reduces the chances of complete recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During a nerve transfer procedure, doctors remove a healthy nerve from another area and attach it to a damaged nerve. In some cases, a tendon transfer may also be performed.
