Microplastics: A Public Health Hazard

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles less than 5 millimeters in size. They come from various sources, including the breakdown of larger plastic items, synthetic fibers from clothing, and microbeads found in personal care products. Due to their small size, microplastics can easily spread through the environment and be ingested by wildlife and humans, raising concerns about their impact on ecosystems and health.

A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that microplastics are linked to serious cardiovascular problems such as heart attacks and strokes.

Everyday Plastics such as bottles, bags, straws, toys etc, released into the environment take centuries to degrade. According to EPA, studies show that carcinogenic chemicals found in plastic products can leach into tap water, which may cause developmental, reproductive, neurological, and immune disorders

Larger plastic waste breaks down from the sun, and from strong ocean currents which are known to act as “cuisinarts” on plastics.

Who are the polluters?

Filtration and Treatment Costs: Surface water systems are facing escalating costs to remove microplastics and other contaminants from drinking water. Advanced filtration technologies and treatment processes are expensive, and these costs are often passed on to consumers.
Infrastructure Upgrades: Drinking water systems may need to invest in new infrastructure to effectively handle the increasing load of plastic pollutants, including upgrades to filtration systems and the development of new treatment methods.
