Alpha-synuclein seed amplification assay (SAA) looks for abnormal protein deposits in the brain which are linked to Parkinson\u2019s disease. For some types of Parkinson\u2019s disease, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutlawsuits.com\/parkinsons-disease-diagnosis-study\/?utm_medium=email&amp;_hsmi=257041168&amp;_hsenc=p2ANqtz-_bklT3QJsSlSR3jHMu9C5GpcrZI-HXgpLrN2UjiqFWVzUeXKjhi5M0TL9dSe7uYAeOG7DL0DJ3Itu2M0VdSKWVdP0Fvg&amp;utm_content=257041168&amp;utm_source=hs_email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accuracy rates exceeded 96 percent<\/a>. \u201cOur results show that the assay classifies people with Parkinson\u2019s disease with high sensitivity and specificity, provides information about molecular heterogeneity, and detects prodromal individuals before diagnosis,\u201d the researchers concluded. \u201cThese findings suggest a crucial role for the \u03b1-synuclein SAA in therapeutic development, both to identify pathologically defined subgroups of people with Parkinson\u2019s disease and to establish biomarker-defined at-risk cohorts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Parkinson\u2019s Disease<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As is normally the case with chronic, serious illnesses, doctors suspect that a combination of environmental and genetic factors causes PD. As nerve cells deteriorate, patients experience motor skill difficulties, like trembling hands, stiffening muscles, and shuffling feet. Later, mental symptoms appear, mostly dementia. Since the early 2000s, the PD death rate has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajmc.com\/view\/large-study-finds-parkinson-disease-us-death-rate-soared-63-over-20-years\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">increased 63 percent<\/a>. This stunning rise suggests that the disease may be more of an environmental issue. Researchers speculate that the aforementioned dying nerve cells affect the dopamine supply in the basal ganglia, an area of the brain that controls many neurological and motor skill functions. Currently PD has no cure. A few available medications, such as MAO-B inhibitors and dopamine agonists manage the symptoms, at least temporarily. As the disease advances, these drugs become less effective. Experimental surgery may reduce symptoms when drugs start failing, but once again, this surgery doesn\u2019t cure PD; it just gives patients a little more time. Overall, PD\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/parkinsons-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most recognizable symptoms<\/a> include tremors, bradykinesia (complete loss of muscle movement), rigidity, and shuffling\/stooped gait. Non-motor symptoms, including autonomic dysfunction (dysautonomia), neuropsychiatric problems (mood, cognition, behavior or thought alterations), sensory (especially altered sense of smell), and sleep difficulties may be present as well. More severe symptoms such as dementia, psychosis, orthostasis, and serious falls occur later. Exercise reduces the risk of PD. Preliminary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nia.nih.gov\/health\/parkinsons-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a> indicate that ibuprofen and similar drugs may stave off this disease as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Parkinson\u2019s Disease and Environmental Toxins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Certain environmental toxins have greater negative health effects than others. Some of these toxins include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pesticides\/Herbicides<\/strong>: Multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16802290\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a> have connected the chemicals in pesticides and herbicides with Parkinson\u2019s disease. These substances include rotenone and permethrin (common ingredients in mosquito-killing clothing or nets), DDT and other organochlorines, such as beta-hexachlorocyclohexane, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.napolilaw.com\/practice-areas\/nationwide-paraquat-parkinsons-disease-lawyers\/\">paraquat<\/a> and 2,4- dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>MPTP<\/strong>: In the 1980s, some intravenous drug users in California used synthetic heroin that had been contaminated with MPTP. They developed PD symptoms within days. 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine is also present in some pesticides.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Agent Orange<\/strong>: This powerful defoliant, which contains the herbicide 2,4-D, was used extensively during the Vietnam War. Recently, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.publichealth.va.gov\/exposures\/agentorange\/conditions\/parkinsonsdisease.asp#:~:text=Research%20on%20Parkinson&#039;s%20disease%20and%20herbicides&amp;text=As%20a%20result%2C%20VA%20recognized,health%20effects%20of%20Agent%20Orange.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs added Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/a> to a list of conditions possibly associated with exposure to it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Manganese and Other Metals<\/strong>: High-dose manganese exposure, which is common in welding and related occupations, causes a form of Parkinsonism called manganism. Exposure to lead may also be associated with a greater risk of Parkinson\u2019s.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Solvents<\/strong>: Trichloroethylene, a commonly used solvent, is used in metal degreasing and dry cleaning, as well as paint thinners and detergents. Several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/news\/story\/common-dry-cleaning-chemical-linked-to-parkinsons-disease#:~:text=TCE%20and%20Parkinson&#039;s%20disease&amp;text=In%20animal%20studies%2C%20TCE%20causes,elevated%20risk%20of%20developing%20Parkinson&#039;s.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies<\/a> demonstrate a link between long-term exposure to solvents and development of Parkinson\u2019s.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Organic Pollutants<\/strong>: PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, were used in various industrial processes until they were banned in the 1970s. Researchers have found high concentrations of PCBs in the brains of people who had Parkinson\u2019s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On a related note, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayo.edu\/research\/labs\/neurobiology-parkinsons-disease\/projects\/traumatic-brain-injury-parkinsonism#:~:text=Epidemiologic%20studies%20have%20reported%20a,increased%20risk%20of%20developing%20parkinsonism.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a prior head injury also increases the risk of PD<\/a>. Like the disease itself, researchers aren\u2019t sure why head injuries increase the risk of PD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Compensation Available<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Environmental laws that ban dangerous PD-causing chemicals is helpful, but they don\u2019t compensate victims.
