Environmental Litigation Attorneys

Recent studies on the agricultural use of Roundup have revealed a significant increase in the amount of this herbicide used on farmers’ crops in the past two decades. It was found that this was a result of the recent discovery of the “Roundup Ready” crop that is resistant to the harmful chemical Glyphosate - the active ingredient in Roundup. Roundup ready crops make the use of this harmful herbicide more convenient and more cost efficient as the genetically engineered seeds are not affected by the mass spraying of Monsanto’s widely used weed killer. As a result, increased exposure - specifically by agricultural workers, farmers and green house employees – has led the IARC to speculate the possible carcinogenic traits of Glyphosate, particularly leading to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. However, this is not the first time Roundup has been involved in environmental or health cases. Roundup and its active ingredient Glyphosate have been linked to the following:
  • Death of human embryonic cells
  • Breast cancer and other cancers
  • Infertility
  • Hormone disruption
  • Birth defects
  • Eye, skin, and respiratory irritation
  • Spontaneous abortions in farm animals
On top of its recent water contamination and PCB lawsuits, Monsanto now faces a growing number of Roundup cancer lawsuits and litigation pressure in the United States. Cases typically involve individuals diagnosed with a form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma following heavy exposure to the herbicide as a farm or agricultural worker, and not necessarily claims from exposure through the food chain. Scientists have shown that incredibly tiny doses can trigger health problems, including potentially irreversible biological changes. Napoli Shkolnik PLLC is currently investigating cases involving this matter regarding environmental litigation. If the workers and farmers had been warned about the potential risks and side effects of Roundup, they could have avoided a cancer diagnosis by taking certain safety precautions and/or by using different products.
