People who use certain Robitussin products could develop life-threatening fungal infections, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
Use of the recalled products could potentially result in severe or life-threatening fungal infections in those with impaired immune systems, Haleon stated in a notice posted by the Food and Drug Administration.

Fungal Infections
Most people associate fungal infections (also known as mycosis) with mild, irritating conditions. In many cases, that’s true. Fungal infections usually affect the skin, hair, nails or mucous membranes. However, mycosis can also infect the lungs or other body parts and organs, especially if the victim has a pre-existing condition. These pre-existing conditions include:
- Poor circulatory system,
- Being immunocompromised,
- AIDS/HIV,
- Cancer or cancer treatments, and
- Immunosuppressant medications, which are used to combat autoimmune conditions or during an organ, stem cell or bone marrow transplant.
People with such conditions might initially get a superficial or Subcutaneous (under the skin) fungal infection. Such an infection then progresses to a form of deep mycosis, like:
- Histoplasmosis (lung and/or brain infection),
- Coccidioidomycosis or Valley Fever (mostly a lung infection),
- Blastomycosis (bones and possible spinal cord and/or brain),
- Aspergillosis (lungs),
- Candidal urinary tract infection,
- Invasive Candidiasis (circulatory system), or
- Cryptococcosis (a kind of meningitis).
Mycosis, which could be contagious, usually begins and spreads quickly. The infection could be almost untreatable unless doctors get a head start.
Does the FDA Protect You?
For many years, the FDA, which was founded in the early 1900s, was an arguably effective watchdog agency. Early FDA bureaucrats were largely responsible for taking dangerous products, such as pure heroin sold as children’s cough syrup, off store shelves.
The FDA may have been a victim of its own success. Lawmakers gave the agency additional responsibilities, but reluctantly allotted additional taxpayer funds.
As a result, the FDA began collecting user fees from the industries it regulates. The agency became increasingly dependent on this money over the years. In 2022, user fees accounted for nearly half of the agency’s revenue. So, the FDA is no longer an independent agency. The more products regulated industries sell, the more user fees they pay, and the more money the FDA receives.
As lawmakers added to the FDA’s chore list, they not only took away its money— they also took away most of its power. Usually, the FDA can only pressure companies to voluntarily recall dangerous products. The agency cannot unilaterally take such action.
How Can A Lawyer Protect You?
A product liability attorney obtains the financial compensation victims need and deserve.
Legal claims force large companies to approach the manufacturing process differently. Instead of cranking out as many bottles of cough syrup as possible, companies reassess the manufacturing process and put people before profits.
The high compensation in a defective product case not only sends a strong message. It also gives victims the financial resources they need going forward. Deep mycosis infections usually cause permanent injuries. These victims should be able to independently pay these bills without relying on charitable or government handouts.
Maximum compensation is usually available in these cases even if a pre-existing medical or other condition contributed to the risk or severity of illness. Manufacturers cannot blame vulnerable victims for injuries their dangerous products substantially caused.
